It has been about 9 months since I first began perusing the pages of Chesapeake Light Craft for my first kayak build; and now, the plans have finally been ordered.  Unexpectedly the task of choosing the perfect kayak was more difficult than one might think.  Many, many, many forum posts on CLC and Guillemot Kayaks; and numerous emails to Nick Schade has led me to the Night Heron Hybrid design.  I was originally leaning towards the Petrel, and even ordered the plans once (but cancelled the order).  It wasn’t until a recent trip to CLC that I realized how tight a non-recreational kayak truly is.

On a side note,  during our trip to CLC; my fiance and I went for a great 3 mile paddle through the harbor just south of Annapolis, MD.  The water was a little choppy from boat traffic which made the paddle a bit more interesting than our usual quite lake trips.  It was fun to duck in-and-out of the dozens of large yachts and waving to the many people hanging out on their boats for the afternoon.  I would highly recommend the trip if you’re in the area.

NO PLANS YET.

Well, I managed to wait 9 months to finally choose a kayak and order the plans; and now i’m finding this past week waiting for them to arrive much harder.  While i’ve placed the order, CLC has placed them on backorder with no definative date of what they will ever ship.  I’m greatful for CLC’s selection of everything small boat related, but their shipping speed is absolutely terrible.  This is the 3rd time i’ve ordered from CLC, and never has the order been shipped within a week.

Oh well, in the mean time we took a trip to Lake George, New York for a long weekend camping trip with a side of paddling.  Some friends rented kayaks from the Adirondack Kayak Co. and we pushed off from their waterfront boathouse loaded to the roof with beautiful yaks.  The water was rather choppy from all the boat traffic which made the paddle a bit more exciting.  My current wooden kayak (design unknown) managed to dip almost completely underwater on a few waves.  We paddled for about 2 hours around some islands within Lake George before calling it a day.  Now that we’re back home, i’m back to checking my order and hoping those plans ship soon!
